Monday, Pirate Day

Every day at RMV starts with the raising of the American flag. The Aspen and Sunshine cabins had the honor today with a bright sunny morning. Today is Pirates Day and many campers arrive at breakfast in costume and ready to start a day of adventures and treasure hunting.

Many of the activities this week will prepare the campers for the prom that will be held on Thursday night. A special meal will be prepared by the RMV staff, photos will be taken, Genesee Hall will be decorated, and music will be provided by a DJ.

Aspen Cabin came to breakfast prepared with a pirate song to share. The song goes like this:

YO HO YO HO,
An Aspin life for me,
YO HO YO HO,
We sailed the open seas,
YAR HAR YAR HAR,
Shiver me Aspen Girls,
YAR HAR YAR HAR,
An Aspen life for me.

Pirate campers set out on their adventures to fish, play sports, drama and music, arts and crafts, and zip line. In the afternoon they had the opportunity to ride the hay wagon.

After lunch one of the first phases of preparing for the prom occurred when the male campers were fitted for their tuxedos.

The evening activity was an All Camp Treasure Hunt. RMV counselor pirates hid throughout camp and campers had to follow a map to find the pirates and their treasures. One of the Pirates was discovered by Frontier Cabin floating in the pool.

The “Magical Theme Selector” chose “Bermuda Triangle” as tomorrow’s theme in keeping with this weeks Leadership Island Cruise theme. What disasters might strike camp tomorrow? Check in with tomorrow night’s Blog.

Thursday Halloween

The rainy day weather did not put a damper on the campers attitude. The rain brought in lots of campers to the Arts and Crafts Room. It was an exciting place with shirt tie dying and pottery glazing. Sunshine Cabin had a great time making a giant yellow and black hot air balloon. Weather permitting there will be a balloon launched tomorrow. Campers had their last opportunity on the Climbing Wall and Zip Line. They were thrilled to have met the challenge.

At snack today there was a Halloween Costume Contest. It was a difficult decision for the judges but after extensive deliberations Sunshine Cabin was selected. The campers then went to their cabins to decorate the front room of each cabin in preparation for the trick or treaters. The campers then went trick or treating at each cabin to collect their candy and see the haunted cabins.

Vespers followed dinner, being forced indoors due to rain. The campers and counselors had lots of fun singing songs and a special selection performed by Frontier Cabin.

The final event for today was the All Camp Halloween Dance. The campers got dressed up and boogied to the tunes of Michael Jackson, Beach Boys, Abba and many other performers. The dance was an excellent way to wrap up a week of friendship, fun, excitement, participation, and sharing time with each other.

This will be the last blog for Camp Freedom. We truly hope that our Associate Campers have enjoyed our daily activity updates and pictures. Associate Campers, please share the Blog and pictures with your camper when they return home. It has been a true pleasure having your campers at camp this year. Thank you for allowing us the pleasure of their company and we look forward to seeing them next year. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Wednesday, Make Your Own Holiday

The "Make Your Own Holiday" was dampened today with all the rain. The morning activities went as scheduled. However, due to rain starting in the late morning and throughout the rest of the day many of the outdoor activities had to be replaced with alternates.

Fishing was a big hit in the morning with many fish being caught and a few meeting the size limit for keeping. Several campers got to go horseback riding while others flew down the zip line. Some of the campers had a great sense of accomplishment and over came their fears with scaling the climbing wall and going down the zip line. In arts and crafts several campers made gift cards for family and friends. Others had their first experience with tie dying by making lovely silk scarves.

Some of the indoor activities included making microwave s'mores, videos, pool, foosball, computers, and drama activities.

Tonight was pizza party night. Each cabin found an indoor location at the main lodge to have their own pizza party. A pizza party would not be complete without a movie. Tonight's feature presentation was "High School Musical".

The "Magical Theme Selector" chose "Halloween" for tomorrow's theme. Costumes will be in order for all activities. The weather cooperating will make it a very fun day.

Tuesday April Fools

This is not an April Fools joke, the weather started with clear skies and cooler temperatures then yesterday morning. But the joke was on us by the afternoon thundershowers returned, "April Fools".

Breakfast had the first "April Fools" joke when Sunshine cabin had everyone sing Happy Birthday to a camper. The joke was on us, "April Fools", it wasn't his birthday. Aspen cabin created some great sing alongs for "April Fools". Try this one:

Way down in Ireland, where nobody knows,
It's tricky Aspen leprechauns,
Watch where they go,
Cause they'll trick you all day,
That's the leprechaun way.

Morning activity time was filled with fishing, zip line, arts & crafts, music & drama, hiking, swimming, and sports.

Ben and Courtney announced at lunch that following today's rest period there would be a $1 pillow tax levied. Who doesn't love their pillow? "April Fools", brought a sigh of relief amongst the campers and counselors.

Thundershowers with a touch hail drove many activities indoors in the afternoon. Music and Drama moved part of Rainbow Cabin's silent movie production indoors and between thunderstorms were able to shoot a couple scenes outdoors. Frontier Cabin was rained out at the fishing pond, but enjoyed the "The Little Mermaid" in the activity room. Campers from Alpine Cabin and Ponderosa Cabin joined together to make bracelets.

At dinner the "Magical Theme Selector" chose "Make Your Own Holiday" as the theme for tomorrow.

The evening all camp activity was the "Drum Circle" lead by the group "Rhythm Vision". "Rhythm Vision" provided drums and other percussion instruments and lead the campers in repeat/response drum beats. It was amazing to see everyone participate and maintain the lead rhythms for over an hour. The enthusiasm included dancing, drumming, jumping, and playing a variety of percussion instruments. The perfect evening ended at the campfire making s'mores.

Monday is Earth Day

Every day starts with the celebration of freedom with the raising of the American flag. The Aspen and Sunshine cabins had the honor today with a bright sunny morning. Associate campers click here for our daily weather forecast.

Today’s celebration is Earth Day. At breakfast the campers were greeted by two aliens with three eyes from a strange planet far far away. The aliens expressed how they were impressed with the great planet Earth and looked forward to the days activities at RMV.

The planet Earth has provided all the resources for today’s activities; water for swimming, fish for fishing, horses for riding, clay for ceramics, gravity for the zip line, music from the sounds of mother nature and fire for roasting marsh mellows.

The evening activity was a recycling fashion show. Each cabin was given a stash of recyclable materials to design fashions that were to be worn at the evening’s fashion show. The Campers had great fun designing their very unique fashions that put to use recyclable materials such as, bottles, cans, paper, plastic, fabric, cardboard, and decorations. Each cabin had the opportunity to present their designs on the runway in Genesee Hall.

Tomorrow’s celebration from the “Magical Theme Selector” is “April Fools”. All of camp will be on alert for the jokesters. No one will be safe.
